Apache HTTP Server
Apache HTTP Server, commonly referred to as Apache, is a free and open-source cross-platform web server software developed and maintained by the Apache Software Foundation, which played a pivotal role in the initial growth of the World Wide Web and remains one of the most widely used web servers globally.
History and Development
The origins of Apache date back to 1995, when a group of developers, later known as the "Apache Group," began working on a series of patches to improve the NCSA HTTPd web server. The name "Apache" was chosen either as a tribute to the Native American Apache tribe, known for their superior warfare strategies and unsurpassed endurance, or as a pun on the word "a patchy," referring to the heavily patched nature of the early codebase.
In 1999, the Apache Group formalized its structure by founding the Apache Software Foundation (ASF), a non-profit organization that now oversees numerous open-source projects. The server has evolved through several major versions. Version 1.x established Apache as the dominant web server on the internet. Version 2.0, released in 2002, introduced a complete rewrite of the architecture to support threading, IPv6, and SSL filtering. Version 2.2 brought enhancements in caching and proxying, while the current major branch, version 2.4, introduced an event-driven Multi-Processing Module (MPM), dynamic module loading, and significantly improved access control mechanisms.
Architecture and Core Features
Apache is renowned for its highly modular architecture. The core server provides only the most basic functionality, while additional features are implemented through loadable modules. This design allows administrators to tailor the server to specific needs, optimizing both performance and security.
A defining characteristic of Apache is its Multi-Processing Module (MPM) system, which dictates how the server binds to network ports, accepts requests, and dispatches them to child processes or threads. The primary MPMs include prefork (a non-threaded, pre-forking web server where each request is handled by a separate process), worker (a hybrid multi-threaded, multi-process web server), and event (an asynchronous, thread-based MPM designed for high concurrency and scalability).
Configuration in Apache is hierarchical and highly flexible. Global settings are defined in central configuration files such as httpd.conf or apache2.conf. Additionally, Apache supports directory-level configuration files named .htaccess, which allow decentralized management of web server settings, including access control, URL rewriting, and authentication, without requiring a full server restart.
Ecosystem and Market Position
Historically, Apache has been the most popular web server on the internet, peaking in market share during the late 1990s and 2000s. It is a foundational component of the LAMP stack (Linux, Apache, MySQL, PHP/Perl/Python), a highly popular software bundle for building dynamic web applications.
In recent years, Apache has faced intense competition from alternative web servers, most notably Nginx and Microsoft IIS. Nginx, with its asynchronous event-driven architecture, has gained significant market share, particularly for serving static content, handling high concurrency, and acting as a reverse proxy. Despite this shift, Apache remains heavily utilized, particularly in enterprise environments and for hosting dynamic content, retaining a substantial portion of the market share among the world's busiest websites.
Security and Extensibility
Security is a primary focus in Apache's development. The server includes robust built-in security features and supports various modules to harden web applications. mod_ssl provides strong cryptography using the Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) and Transport Layer Security (TLS) protocols. Additionally, third-party modules like mod_security function as a Web Application Firewall (WAF), offering real-time monitoring, logging, and access control to protect against a wide range of web-based attacks, including SQL injection and cross-site scripting.
The extensibility of Apache is facilitated by its vast ecosystem of modules. It seamlessly integrates with various programming languages and frameworks. For instance, mod_php (historically) and PHP-FPM allow for the execution of PHP scripts, mod_wsgi supports Python applications, and mod_proxy enables reverse proxying and load balancing to backend application servers.
Licensing
Apache HTTP Server is distributed under the Apache License 2.0. This is a permissive free software license that allows users to freely use, modify, and distribute the software, including in proprietary and closed-source projects. The license requires that the original copyright notice and a disclaimer of warranty be included in all copies or substantial portions of the software, but it does not impose the copyleft restrictions found in licenses like the GNU General Public License (GPL). This permissive licensing model has significantly contributed to the widespread adoption and integration of Apache in both open-source and commercial software ecosystems.
