Ad hominem
Ad hominem (Latin for "to the person" or "against the person") is a logical fallacy in which an argument is rebutted by attacking the character, motive, or other attribute of the person making the argument, rather than addressing the substance of the argument itself. It is one of the most common informal fallacies encountered in debates, politics, and everyday discourse, where the focus is shifted from the logical merits of a claim to the perceived flaws of the claimant.
Definition and Etymology
The term "ad hominem" originates from Latin, translating literally to "to the man" or "against the man." In the context of logic and rhetoric, it refers to an argumentative strategy that bypasses the actual topic of discussion to target the individual presenting the argument. While it is universally recognized as a fallacy when used to invalidate the logical structure of a deductive argument, it is important to distinguish between its fallacious use in general argumentation and its legitimate use in specific contexts, such as assessing the credibility of a witness in a legal setting.
Types of Ad Hominem
The ad hominem fallacy manifests in several distinct forms, each targeting a different aspect of the opponent's persona or situation.
Abusive Ad Hominem
Also known as ad hominem abusive, this is the most direct and recognizable form of the fallacy. It involves outright insulting or belittling the opponent to undermine their argument. For example, dismissing a person's economic policy proposal by calling them "stupid" or "ignorant" without addressing the economic principles they presented. The abusive attack aims to discredit the person so thoroughly that their arguments are automatically rejected by the audience.
Circumstantial Ad Hominem
This variant points out that the opponent is in a specific circumstance or has a vested interest that allegedly biases their argument. For instance, if a tobacco lobbyist argues that smoking is not highly dangerous, an opponent might dismiss the argument by pointing out the lobbyist's financial ties to the tobacco industry. While pointing out a conflict of interest can be relevant to assessing bias, it becomes a fallacy when used as the sole reason to reject the argument's factual claims without examining the evidence provided.
Tu Quoque
Translating from Latin as "you also," tu quoque is a specific type of circumstantial ad hominem that accuses the opponent of hypocrisy. It occurs when someone's argument is dismissed because their own behavior contradicts the premise of their argument. For example, if a doctor who smokes advises a patient to quit smoking, the patient might reject the medical advice by pointing out the doctor's smoking habit. The fallacy lies in the fact that the doctor's hypocrisy does not invalidate the medical truth that smoking is harmful.
Guilt by Association
This form of ad hominem occurs when an argument is attacked by associating the person making it with a disliked or discredited group or individual. If Person A proposes a policy, and Person B points out that Person C, who is widely despised, also supports the same policy, Person B is using guilt by association. The argument is rejected not on its merits, but because of the perceived negative traits of the associated party.
Ad Hominem in Logic and Rhetoric
In formal logic, an ad hominem attack is strictly invalid because the truth value of a proposition is independent of the person asserting it. The logical structure of an argument relies on its premises and the validity of its inferences, not on the moral character, social status, or personal beliefs of the arguer. In rhetoric, however, ad hominem is frequently employed as a persuasive tactic. Because audiences are often influenced by ethos (the perceived character and credibility of the speaker), attacking an opponent's character can be highly effective in swaying public opinion, even if it is logically unsound.
Valid Uses of Ad Hominem
Despite its status as a logical fallacy, attacking the person is not always fallacious. In specific contexts, the character, credibility, or circumstances of the person making a claim are directly relevant to the claim itself.
In a court of law, cross-examining a witness to reveal a history of perjury or a financial motive to lie is a valid and necessary use of ad hominem reasoning. Here, the argument is not about a general philosophical or factual claim, but about the reliability of the testimony. Similarly, in epistemology, if a person claims to have a direct sensory experience or a specific personal qualification, questioning their sensory acuity or credentials is a relevant critique. The key distinction is whether the personal attack is relevant to the specific claim being made; if it is, it is not a fallacy.
Distinction from Related Fallacies
Ad hominem is often confused with other logical fallacies, but it has distinct characteristics. It differs from the straw man fallacy, which involves misrepresenting or exaggerating an opponent's argument to make it easier to attack. While a straw man attacks a distorted version of the argument, ad hominem attacks the person making the argument.
It is also distinct from poisoning the well, which is a preemptive ad hominem attack. Poisoning the well involves presenting negative information about an opponent before they have a chance to speak, thereby ensuring that anything they say is viewed with suspicion. While poisoning the well relies on ad hominem tactics, it is specifically characterized by its preemptive nature and its intent to shut down the opponent's discourse before it begins.
