Apus
Apus is a Latinized term derived from the Ancient Greek word apous, meaning "footless" or "without feet," and is primarily utilized in scientific nomenclature to designate a faint southern constellation, a genus of highly aerial birds known as swifts, and historically, a genus of freshwater crustaceans.
Etymology
The term originates from the Ancient Greek word apous (ἄπους), which is formed by combining the privative prefix a- (meaning "without") and pous (meaning "foot"). In biological taxonomy, the name was applied to organisms that possess highly reduced, inconspicuous, or seemingly absent legs. In astronomy, the name was adopted to represent the bird-of-paradise, as early preserved specimens brought to Europe by explorers had their feet and wings removed, leading to the widespread misconception that the birds lacked feet entirely.
Astronomy: Apus Constellation
Apus is a small and faint constellation located in the deep southern sky. It was created in the late 16th century by the Dutch astronomer and cartographer Petrus Plancius, based on the celestial observations of the navigators Pieter Dirkszoon Keyser and Frederick de Houtman during the first Dutch trading expedition to the East Indies. The constellation officially represents a bird-of-paradise.
Apus is bordered by the constellations Triangulum Australe, Circinus, Musca, Chamaeleon, Octans, and Pavo. Because of its far southern declination, it is entirely invisible to observers in most of the Northern Hemisphere. The constellation lacks any notably bright stars; its brightest star, Alpha Apodis, is an orange giant with an apparent magnitude of 3.83. Despite the lack of bright stars, Apus contains several notable deep-sky objects, including the globular clusters NGC 6101 and IC 4499, as well as the spiral galaxy IC 4633.
Biology: Apus (Bird Genus)
In ornithology, Apus is a genus of swifts in the family Apodidae, order Apodiformes. The genus name directly references the birds' extremely short legs, which are adapted for clinging to vertical surfaces such as cliffs or walls rather than walking or perching on branches. Swifts in this genus are renowned for their highly aerial lifestyle; they feed, mate, gather nesting materials, and even sleep while in continuous flight.
The type species of the genus is the common swift (Apus apus), which is widely distributed across Europe, Asia, and Africa. Species within the Apus genus are characterized by their streamlined bodies, long, swept-back wings that resemble a crescent or boomerang, and short, forked tails. They are among the fastest birds in level flight and are capable of remaining airborne for several months at a time without ever landing.
Biology: Apus (Crustacean)
Historically in zoology, Apus was used as a genus name for a group of freshwater crustaceans commonly known as tadpole shrimp, which belong to the order Notostraca. The most famous species classified under this historical genus was Apus cancriformis. These ancient creatures are often referred to as "living fossils" due to their striking morphological similarity to Triassic-era fossils.
In modern taxonomic classification, the genus name Apus has been largely superseded for these crustaceans to avoid homonymy with the bird genus. The species formerly known as Apus cancriformis is now correctly classified as Triops cancriformis. The original application of the name Apus to these animals was likely due to early anatomical confusion or a reference to their numerous, seemingly uniform, leaf-like swimming appendages that obscure their actual walking legs.
