American Airlines, Inc. is a major United States-based airline headquartered in Fort Worth, Texas, and the largest airline in the world by fleet size and passengers carried, operating an extensive global route network with a primary focus on the Americas as a founding member of the Oneworld airline alliance.

History

The origins of American Airlines trace back to 1934, when C. R. Smith consolidated several smaller airlines, including Robertson Aircraft Corporation and Colonial Air Transport, to form the modern carrier. The airline played a pivotal role in commercial aviation history by being the first to operate the Douglas DC-3, which revolutionized air travel by making it profitable to carry passengers rather than relying on mail subsidies. Following the Airline Deregulation Act of 1978, American Airlines aggressively expanded its route network and hub system. In 2001, the company acquired the assets of Trans World Airlines (TWA), significantly boosting its international presence. In 2013, American Airlines announced a merger with US Airways, which was completed in 2015, creating the largest airline in the world at the time. The airline faced severe financial challenges during the global pandemic, filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in October 2020, but successfully restructured and exited bankruptcy by December of the same year.

Corporate Affairs

American Airlines is headquartered in Fort Worth, Texas, located near the Dallas–Fort Worth International Airport (DFW). The company moved to its current headquarters campus in 2011, consolidating its operations from previous locations in Arlington and Irving, Texas. The airline's regional operations are conducted under the American Eagle brand, which is operated by wholly owned regional subsidiaries including Envoy Air, Piedmont Airlines, and PSA Airlines. These regional carriers feed passengers into the mainline hub system, operating a fleet of regional jets and turboprops to connect smaller cities to the primary hubs.

Destinations and Hubs

The airline operates one of the most extensive domestic and international route networks in the world. Its primary hub airports include Dallas/Fort Worth (DFW), Charlotte (CLT), Chicago–O'Hare (ORD), Miami (MIA), Los Angeles (LAX), New York–JFK (JFK), Phoenix (PHX), Philadelphia (PHL), and Washington–National (DCA). Dallas/Fort Worth serves as the largest and most critical hub, functioning as the central connecting point for the airline's vast network. American Airlines offers comprehensive coverage across the United States, Canada, Latin America, and the Caribbean, alongside significant transatlantic and transpacific operations to Europe, the Middle East, and Asia.

Fleet

American Airlines operates a large and diverse mainline fleet consisting of both Airbus and Boeing aircraft, optimized for various route lengths and passenger demands. The narrow-body fleet primarily includes the Airbus A319, A320, and A321 families, as well as the Boeing 737-800 and 737 MAX 8. For wide-body and long-haul operations, the airline utilizes the Boeing 777-200, 777-300ER, and the Boeing 787-8 and 787-9 Dreamliners. In recent years, the company has undertaken a significant fleet modernization program, retiring older, less fuel-efficient aircraft and taking delivery of new Airbus A321neos and Boeing 737 MAX aircraft to improve operational efficiency and reduce carbon emissions.

Frequent Flyer Program

The airline's loyalty program, AAdvantage, was launched in 1981 and is recognized as the world's oldest frequent-flyer program. The program allows members to earn miles based on ticket price and fare class, which can be redeemed for award flights, cabin upgrades, and other travel-related services. AAdvantage features a tiered elite status system, including Gold, Platinum, Platinum Pro, and Executive Platinum, each offering escalating benefits such as priority boarding, complimentary upgrades, and access to Admirals Club lounges. The program also maintains strategic partnerships with various credit card issuers and non-airline retail partners to facilitate mile accrual.

Alliances and Partnerships

American Airlines is a founding member of the Oneworld airline alliance, having established the coalition in 1999 alongside British Airways, Cathay Pacific, Qantas, and Canadian Airlines. Through Oneworld, American Airlines provides its passengers with seamless connections, coordinated schedules, and reciprocal frequent-flyer benefits across a global network of partner carriers. Additionally, the airline maintains numerous bilateral codeshare and interline agreements with both Oneworld members and non-allied carriers, significantly extending its reach into regions where it does not operate its own aircraft.
