Balboa

Balboa is a term with multiple meanings, most notably referring to the Spanish explorer Vasco Núñez de Balboa, the currency of Panama, a style of swing dance, and various geographic locations.

Vasco Núñez de Balboa

Vasco Núñez de Balboa (c. 1475–1519) was a Spanish explorer, governor, and conquistador. He is best known for crossing the Isthmus of Panama in 1513 and becoming the first European to sight the Pacific Ocean from the New World. Balboa claimed the ocean and all adjacent lands for Spain, a discovery that paved the way for Spanish expansion along the western coast of South America. He also founded the first permanent European settlement on the mainland of the Americas, Santa María la Antigua del Darién (in present-day Colombia/Panama). Balboa’s later career was marked by political rivalry with Pedro Arias Dávila, who eventually had him arrested and executed on charges of treason.

The Panamanian balboa (symbol: B/.; ISO code: PAB) is the official currency of Panama. It is named after the explorer Vasco Núñez de Balboa. The balboa is pegged at par with the United States dollar, and Panama does not issue its own banknotes; U.S. dollar notes circulate alongside locally minted balboa coins in denominations of 1, 5, 10, 25, 50 centésimos and 1 balboa. The coinage is similar in size and composition to the corresponding U.S. coins. The balboa was introduced in 1904, replacing the Colombian peso.
