Plate appearance
In baseball statistics, a plate appearance (denoted by PA) is a count of each time a batter completes a turn batting against a pitcher, ending when the batter is put out, reaches base, or is otherwise awarded or denied the right to continue their turn.
Definition and Rules
According to the Official Baseball Rules, a plate appearance is recorded every time a batter steps into the batter's box and their turn at bat concludes. A plate appearance ends when the batter is put out, reaches base safely, is awarded first base (such as via a base on balls or hit by pitch), or hits a sacrifice bunt or sacrifice fly. It also includes instances where the batter is replaced by a pinch hitter during the at-bat. In such cases, the plate appearance is credited to the original batter unless the pinch hitter completes the turn with two strikes and subsequently strikes out, in which case the plate appearance and the strikeout are charged to the pinch hitter.
Difference Between Plate Appearance and At Bat
While often confused by casual observers, a plate appearance (PA) and an at bat (AB) are distinct statistical categories. Every at bat is a plate appearance, but not every plate appearance is an at bat. An at bat is only recorded when a plate appearance ends in a hit, an out, a fielder's choice, or an error. Plate appearances that result in a base on balls (walk), hit by pitch, sacrifice bunt, sacrifice fly, or catcher's interference do not count as at bats. This distinction is mathematically crucial because at bats are used to calculate a player's batting average and slugging percentage, whereas plate appearances are used to calculate on-base percentage (OBP).
Statistical Significance
Plate appearances serve as the denominator for several key offensive metrics, most notably on-base percentage (OBP) and on-base plus slugging (OPS). Because these statistics aim to measure a player's overall ability to avoid making outs and reach base, excluding walks and hit-by-pitches—which are counted in PA but not AB—would fundamentally skew the evaluation of a hitter's offensive contribution.
Furthermore, plate appearances are the standard metric used to determine whether a player qualifies for the batting title and other offensive league leadership boards. In Major League Baseball (MLB), a player must accumulate 3.1 plate appearances for each of his team's scheduled games to qualify for the batting championship. In a standard 162-game season, this equates to a minimum of 502 plate appearances. This threshold ensures that the batting champion is a full-time player who has faced a sufficient volume of major league pitching.
Calculation and Components
The total number of plate appearances for a player or a team can be calculated by summing the various outcomes of a turn at bat. The standard formula is expressed as:
PA = AB + BB + HBP + SH + SF + CI
Where:
- AB = At Bats
- BB = Bases on Balls (Walks)
- HBP = Hit by Pitch
- SH = Sacrifice Hits (Bunts)
- SF = Sacrifice Flies
- CI = Catcher's Interference (or Times Reached Base on Interference)
It is important to note that reaching base on a fielding error is counted within the At Bat (AB) category, and therefore does not need to be added separately to the plate appearance total.
Historical Records and Milestones
In Major League Baseball history, several players have set remarkable records for plate appearances, reflecting both their longevity and their ability to consistently get on base. Pete Rose holds the all-time career record for plate appearances with 15,890, a testament to his 24-season career and high on-base skills. The single-season record is held by Jimmy Rollins, who recorded 778 plate appearances during his 2007 National League MVP season. High plate appearance totals in a single season are typically achieved by players who bat at the top of the lineup, play in all 162 games, and frequently draw walks or work deep counts.
