Czech Republic
The Czech Republic (Czech: Česká republika), also known as Czechia, is a landlocked country in Central Europe, bordered by Germany to the west, Austria to the south, Slovakia to the east, and Poland to the northeast. It covers an area of 78,871 square kilometers and has a population of approximately 10.7 million people. Its capital and largest city is Prague, a major cultural and economic hub.
History
The territory of the modern Czech Republic has been inhabited since the Paleolithic era. The Slavic tribes arrived in the 6th century, and the first Slavic state, the Great Moravian Empire, emerged in the 9th century. The Duchy (later Kingdom) of Bohemia developed as a significant regional power within the Holy Roman Empire. The 14th century saw the height of Bohemian influence under Charles IV, who made Prague the imperial seat. The Hussite Wars (1419–1434) marked a period of religious conflict and reform. After 1526, the Bohemian Crown came under Habsburg rule, and the region remained part of the Austrian Empire (later Austria-Hungary) until 1918.
Following World War I, the independent Czechoslovak Republic was established, uniting the Czech lands with Slovakia and Subcarpathian Ruthenia. The interwar period was a democratic and prosperous era. However, the Munich Agreement of 1938 ceded the Sudetenland to Nazi Germany, and the country was fully occupied in 1939, becoming the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia. After World War II, Czechoslovakia fell under Soviet influence, becoming a communist state in 1948. The Prague Spring of 1968, a period of political liberalization, was crushed by Warsaw Pact invasion. The Velvet Revolution of 1989 peacefully ended communist rule. On January 1, 1993, Czechoslovakia peacefully dissolved, and the Czech Republic became an independent sovereign state.
Geography
The Czech Republic is characterized by a diverse landscape. The western part comprises Bohemia, a plateau surrounded by low mountains: the Šumava (Bohemian Forest), the Ore Mountains, and the Krkonoše (Giant Mountains), which contain the country’s highest point, Sněžka (1,603 m). The eastern part, Moravia, is more hilly, with the Carpathian Mountains in the east and the lowland of the Morava River in the south. The country is drained by the Elbe (Labe) and Vltava rivers, the latter flowing through Prague. The climate is temperate continental, with warm summers and cold, cloudy winters, with precipitation varying by region.
Government and Politics
The Czech Republic is a parliamentary representative democracy with a multi-party system. The head of state is the president, elected by direct popular vote for a five-year term, whose powers are largely ceremonial but include appointing the prime minister and dissolving parliament. The head of government is the prime minister, who is appointed by the president and holds executive authority. The bicameral Parliament consists of the Chamber of Deputies (200 members) and the Senate (81 members). The highest judicial body is the Supreme Court, with the Constitutional Court overseeing constitutional matters.
The country is a member of the European Union (since 2004), NATO (since 1999), the United Nations, the OECD, and the Schengen Area. Its political landscape has been dominated by parties such as the Civic Democratic Party, the Czech Social Democratic Party, the Communist Party of Bohemia and Moravia, and newer movements like ANO 2011 and the Pirate Party.
Economy
The Czech Republic has a developed, high-income economy with a GDP per capita among the highest in Central Europe. It is a social market economy, characterized by a strong industrial base, particularly in automotive manufacturing (e.g., Škoda Auto), machinery, electronics, steel, and chemicals. Services account for over 60% of GDP, and tourism is a significant sector, with Prague attracting millions of visitors annually. The country is a major exporter, with its largest trading partners being Germany, Slovakia, and other EU states. The currency is the Czech koruna (CZK), which has not yet been replaced by the euro. Unemployment rates have historically been low, and the economy has shown resilience during global downturns. Challenges include an aging population, reliance on export markets, and regional disparities.
Demographics
The population is predominantly ethnic Czech (about 95%), with minorities including Slovaks, Ukrainians, Vietnamese, Poles, Roma, and Germans. The official language is Czech, a West Slavic language. Religious affiliation is low: according to recent censuses, around 20% of the population identifies as religious, with the majority of those being Roman Catholic; a significant share claims no religious affiliation. The country has a high urbanization rate (over 75%), with the largest cities being Prague, Brno, Ostrava, and Plzeň. Life expectancy is around 79 years, and the population is aging, with a fertility rate below replacement level.
Culture
Czech culture has deeply influenced European arts and sciences. Literature includes figures like Franz Kafka (who wrote in German), Božena Němcová, Karel Čapek (who coined the word “robot”), and Milan Kundera. Classical music boasts composers such as Bedřich Smetana, Antonín Dvořák, and Leoš Janáček. The country is famous for its architecture—Gothic cathedrals, Baroque palaces, and Art Nouveau buildings—as well as its castles (e.g., Karlštejn, Český Krumlov). Czech cuisine is known for hearty dishes like dumplings, roast pork, sauerkraut, and beer—the Czech Republic has the highest beer consumption per capita in the world. Traditional festivals include the Prague Spring International Music Festival, folk music gatherings, and Christmas markets. The modern cultural scene is vibrant, with a thriving film industry (e.g., Miloš Forman) and contemporary visual arts.
Tourism
Tourism is a vital part of the economy, with Prague Castle, the Charles Bridge, the Old Town Square, and the astronomical clock being top attractions. Other popular destinations include the spa towns of Karlovy Vary and Mariánské Lázně, the medieval town of Kutná Hora, the Moravian wine region, and the natural beauty of the Bohemian Switzerland National Park and the Krkonoše mountains. The country is well-connected by a dense rail and road network, and offers a wide range of accommodations and cultural events for visitors.
