Bee
Bees are flying insects closely related to wasps and ants, known for their roles in pollination and, in the case of the best-known bee species, the western honey bee, for producing honey and beeswax. They are a monophyletic lineage within the superfamily Apoidea and are present on every continent except Antarctica, with over 20,000 known species grouped into seven to nine recognized families.
Etymology
The word "bee" derives from the Old English bēo, from Proto-Germanic bijōn, and is cognate with the Dutch bij and German Biene. The term is used in various compound forms, such as "honeybee" and "bumblebee," to distinguish specific groups.
Taxonomy and Evolution
Bees are classified under the order Hymenoptera, within the clade Anthophila. They evolved from predatory wasps, likely from the family Crabronidae, during the Cretaceous period, around 120 million years ago. The earliest known bee fossils, preserved in amber from the Late Cretaceous, show traits adapted for pollen collection. The transition from predation to pollen-feeding is a key evolutionary step. Bee phylogeny divides into two main groups: the long-tongued bees (Megachilidae, Apidae) and short-tongued bees (Colletidae, Andrenidae, Halictidae, Melittidae, Stenotritidae). The honey bees (genus Apis) and stingless bees (Meliponini) are among the most socially complex.
Morphology
Bees range in size from about 2 mm to 40 mm in length. Their bodies are divided into head, thorax, and abdomen. The head houses compound eyes, ocelli, antennae, and mouthparts adapted for lapping nectar or chewing pollen. Most bees have branched, plumose hairs (scopa) on their legs or abdomen that trap pollen grains. The wings are membranous, with the forewings larger than the hindwings, held together during flight by a row of small hooks (hamuli). The stinger, present only in females, is a modified ovipositor; in honey bees it is barbed and detaches after use, causing death. Many solitary bees have smooth stingers and can sting repeatedly.
Life Cycle
Bees undergo complete metamorphosis: egg, larva, pupa, adult. The female typically lays an egg in a cell provisioned with a mixture of pollen and nectar (sometimes regurgitated honey). The larva hatches, feeds on the provision, grows, and molts several times before spinning a cocoon and pupating. After a period of development, the adult emerges. The duration of each stage varies by species and environmental conditions. In social bees, the queen lays eggs, and workers care for the brood. In solitary species, the female provisions each cell and seals it, leaving the offspring to develop independently.
Social Behavior
Bees exhibit a range of social structures. Most species (about 90%) are solitary, with each female building and provisioning her own nest without cooperation. Some bees are communal (sharing a nest but provisioning individually), semisocial (some cooperative care), or primitively eusocial (where a queen and workers coexist, but caste distinction is flexible). Highly eusocial bees, such as honey bees (genus Apis) and stingless bees (Meliponini), have distinct castes: one or few queens, many sterile female workers, and males (drones) produced seasonally for mating. Honey bee colonies communicate using the "waggle dance" to indicate food source location. Bumblebees are primitively eusocial, with annual colonies founded by a queen in spring.
Pollination
Bees are the most significant group of pollinators in ecosystems and agriculture. As they forage for nectar and pollen, they transfer pollen grains from one flower to another, facilitating fertilization. Many plants have co-evolved with bees, developing specific flower shapes, colors, and scents to attract them. It is estimated that one-third of the human food supply depends on bee pollination, including fruits, vegetables, nuts, and oilseeds. Some bees, such as the alfalfa leafcutter bee and the blue orchard bee, are managed commercially for crop pollination.
Relationship with Humans
Humans have maintained a close relationship with bees for millennia. Honey hunting dates back to prehistoric times, as evidenced by cave paintings in Spain and Africa. Beekeeping (apiculture) became established in ancient Egypt, Greece, and China. Today, the western honey bee (Apis mellifera) is the most widely managed species, valued for honey, beeswax, propolis, royal jelly, and pollen. Stingless bees are kept in tropical regions for honey and wax. Beekeeping provides economic benefits through pollination services and hive products. However, introduced honey bees can compete with native bee species and disrupt local ecosystems.
Threats
Bee populations worldwide face multiple threats. Habitat loss due to urbanization, intensive agriculture, and pesticide use reduces foraging and nesting resources. Neonicotinoid insecticides, in particular, have been linked to impaired navigation, learning, and immune function in bees. Diseases and parasites, such as the mite Varroa destructor and the microsporidian Nosema, cause colony losses. Climate change alters flower bloom timing and temperature ranges, disrupting bee life cycles. Invasive species, such as the Asian hornet, prey on bees. Conservation efforts include creating pollinator-friendly habitats, reducing pesticide use, and supporting research on bee health.
Cultural Significance
Bees have appeared in mythology, religion, and symbolism across cultures. In ancient Egypt, bees were associated with royalty and the sun god Ra. In Greek mythology, the "Lady of the Bees" was a title for priestesses of Artemis and Demeter. Bee motifs appear in European heraldry and coinage, symbolizing industry, cooperation, and eloquence. The honey bee is the state insect of 17 U.S. states. In modern culture, bees are used as icons for environmentalism and sustainability, and their decline has spurred global campaigns like "Save the Bees."
