BeBox
BeBox is a personal computer introduced by Be Inc. in October 1995, designed to run the BeOS operating system and notable for its use of dual PowerPC processors, a distinctive industrial design, and a strong focus on multimedia and multitasking performance.
Overview
The BeBox was the first and only hardware platform produced by Be Inc., a company founded by former Apple executive Jean-Louis Gassée. It was conceived as a high-performance desktop computer for developers and early adopters, intended to showcase the capabilities of BeOS—a new, object-oriented operating system optimized for digital media and symmetric multiprocessing (SMP). Although commercially unsuccessful, the BeBox represents a significant milestone in the history of personal computing for its pioneering use of dual CPUs in a consumer-oriented machine and its role in the development of BeOS, which later influenced various aspects of modern operating systems.
Hardware Design
The BeBox was built around two 66 MHz or 133 MHz PowerPC 603e processors (later models used 603r), enabling true symmetric multiprocessing that was rare for desktop computers at the time. It featured a custom motherboard with a proprietary hardware bus, the GeekPort, which provided a set of general-purpose I/O pins for direct connection to sensors, actuators, and other external devices—an innovative feature aimed at hobbyists and engineers.
Other hardware specifications included:
- Memory: 8 MB to 256 MB of EDO RAM (using 72-pin SIMMs).
- Storage: Typically a SCSI hard drive, though IDE was supported later.
- Graphics: A standard PCI slot allowed for various graphics cards; typically used a Matrox Millennium or similar.
- Expansion: Two PCI slots and two ISA slots (though ISA was rarely used).
- Ports: Two serial ports, a parallel port, ADB for keyboard and mouse, and an external SCSI connector.
- Audio: Built-in 16‑bit stereo audio with hardware mixing.
- Case: A distinctive tower case with a front-panel display of two vertically arranged rows of LEDs (called "Blinkenlights") that showed CPU load and other activity, and a unique trapezoidal shape.
The GeekPort was a 40‑pin digital I/O (DIO) and analog input port, separate from standard computer interfaces, allowing users to connect custom electronics without additional hardware. It included 8 bits of digital I/O, two analog inputs, and power/ground lines.
Operating System
BeOS—the primary operating system for the BeBox—was designed from the ground up with a fully preemptive, multithreaded kernel capable of efficient symmetric multiprocessing. It supported a 64‑bit journaled file system (BFS), real-time audio and video processing, and a lightweight graphical user interface (the "Workspace" environment). BeOS was renowned for its low latency and high responsiveness, especially for multimedia tasks. The BeBox shipped with BeOS Release 1.0, but later versions also ran on the platform, including BeOS 4.x and 5.x (though later releases were primarily for PowerPC Macs and Intel x86).
Market History and Legacy
Be Inc. began shipping the first BeBox units (the "BeBox Freestyle" or "Early Adopter" model) in late 1995, priced at around $1,600 for a dual‑66 MHz system. A faster model with 133 MHz processors followed in 1996. Despite its technical innovations, the BeBox faced numerous challenges:
- Competition: Dominated by Wintel PCs and Macintoshes, the BeBox had a very small software library.
- Pricing: Relatively expensive for its performance level, especially considering the lack of mainstream applications.
- Limited distribution: Sold primarily via mail order and a few specialized retailers.
By 1997, Be Inc. abandoned the BeBox hardware to focus on licensing BeOS for other platforms, particularly the PowerPC Mac (via the "BeOS for Mac" project) and later Intel x86. Fewer than 2,000 BeBox units were ever produced, making them a rare collector's item today.
The BeBox's influence extends beyond its short commercial life. Its dual-CPU architecture presaged the later adoption of SMP in consumer desktops. The GeekPort concept inspired similar I/O expansion ideas in open‑source hardware projects. BeOS itself—through its development and eventual open‑sourcing as Haiku—has left a lasting legacy in operating system design, particularly in the areas of real‑time media handling and efficient multi‑processing.
