Atari ST
The Atari ST is a line of home and personal computers produced by Atari Corporation, introduced in 1985 as the successor to the Atari 8-bit family and serving as a direct competitor to the Commodore Amiga and Apple Macintosh. The designation "ST" officially stands for "Sixteen/Thirty-two," referring to the Motorola 68000 microprocessor's 16-bit external data bus and 32-bit internal architecture.
History and Development
The development of the Atari ST was initiated after Jack Tramiel, the founder of Commodore, acquired Atari's consumer division from Warner Communications in 1984. Seeking to rapidly re-enter the personal computer market, Tramiel's team utilized off-the-shelf components to create a cost-effective machine. The Atari ST was unveiled in early 1985 and released in mid-1985. It was notable for being one of the first affordable home computers to feature a bitmapped color graphics interface and a mouse-driven graphical user interface, positioning it directly against the recently released Apple Macintosh and the upcoming Commodore Amiga.
Hardware Specifications
The original Atari ST models were powered by a Motorola 68000 CPU clocked at 8 MHz. Initial memory configurations ranged from 512 KB in the 520ST to 1 MB in the 1040ST, with later models and expansions supporting up to 4 MB.
The graphics subsystem was handled by custom Atari chips, primarily the Video Shift Register and the Shifter, which supported multiple display resolutions. These included a low-resolution mode of 320×200 pixels with 16 colors from a palette of 512, a medium-resolution mode of 640×200 pixels with 4 colors, and a high-resolution monochrome mode of 640×400 pixels, which required a dedicated monochrome monitor.
Audio was generated by the Yamaha YM2149 Programmable Sound Generator (PSG), providing three square-wave channels and one noise channel. While adequate for basic sound effects, it was less advanced than the Amiga's Paula chip. Storage was typically handled by built-in 3.5-inch double-density floppy disk drives, which became a standard feature in the "FM" (Floppy Machine) models like the 520STFM and 1040STFM.
A defining hardware feature of the Atari ST was the inclusion of built-in MIDI (Musical Instrument Digital Interface) ports. This made the machine highly attractive to musicians and established it as a standard tool in computer-based music production.
Operating System and Software
The Atari ST ran on the Atari TOS (The Operating System), which was built around the GEM (Graphics Environment Manager) developed by Digital Research. GEM provided a graphical user interface with windows, icons, and a mouse pointer, closely resembling the Macintosh OS. The underlying command-line operating system was GEMDOS, a 16-bit derivative of CP/M-86.
While the OS was functional, it was sometimes criticized for being less integrated and more prone to system crashes than its Macintosh counterpart. However, the platform benefited from a robust library of third-party software. It became the industry standard for MIDI sequencing, hosting landmark applications such as Steinberg Cubase and Emagic Notator. It also found significant success in desktop publishing (DTP) with software like Timeworks Publisher and Calamus, as well as in CAD and business applications.
Market Impact and Legacy
The Atari ST carved out a highly successful niche in the mid-to-late 1980s. Its built-in MIDI capabilities gave it a distinct advantage in the music industry, and it remained a staple in recording studios well into the 1990s. In the educational and home markets, it competed fiercely with the Commodore Amiga. While the Amiga eventually dominated the gaming and multimedia sectors due to its superior custom graphics and sound hardware, the Atari ST maintained a strong presence in productivity, programming, and professional audio.
The machine also fostered a dedicated demoscene and gaming community. Early titles were often identical to or slightly inferior to Amiga ports, but the ST hosted numerous classic games and was a popular platform for shareware and public domain software distributed via floppy disk and bulletin board systems (BBS).
Decline and Discontinuation
Atari released several upgraded models to extend the ST's lifecycle, including the Mega ST series, which featured a more professional case and enhanced I/O, the TT030, which utilized a faster 32-bit Motorola 68030 processor, and the Falcon030, which attempted to bridge the gap between the ST line and multimedia capabilities.
Despite these hardware improvements, Atari struggled with internal management issues, inconsistent marketing, and a failure to deliver a true next-generation consumer successor. The rapid rise of IBM PC compatibles running Microsoft Windows, coupled with the continued dominance of the Amiga in the enthusiast market, severely eroded the ST's user base. Atari officially discontinued the Atari ST line in 1993, shortly before the company was reverse-merged into JTS Inc. and eventually exited the hardware market entirely.
