Arnulf of Carinthia
Arnulf of Carinthia (c. 850 – 8 December 899) was a Carolingian king of East Francia, king of Italy, and Holy Roman Emperor, who played a pivotal role in the late 9th-century fragmentation and political realignment of the Carolingian Empire.
Early Life and Rise to Power
Arnulf was born around 850 as the illegitimate son of Carloman of Bavaria, the eldest son of Louis the German, and his concubine Liutswind. Despite his illegitimate birth, he was recognized by his father and later legitimized. In 887, his father appointed him Margrave, and later Duke, of Carinthia, a southeastern frontier march of East Francia.
During this period, the Carolingian Empire was ruled by Arnulf's granduncle, Charles the Fat, who had reunified much of the empire but proved to be a weak and ineffective ruler. Disillusioned by Charles's failure to protect the realm from Viking incursions and his inability to manage the fractious nobility, Arnulf, with the support of the East Frankish aristocracy, led a rebellion. In November 887, Arnulf's forces confronted Charles at Trebur. Charles, lacking the military backing to resist, abdicated and died shortly thereafter in January 888, allowing Arnulf to assume the kingship of East Francia without significant opposition.
Reign in East Francia and Military Campaigns
Upon securing the throne of East Francia, Arnulf focused on consolidating his power and defending his borders. He faced immediate threats from the Moravian Empire under Svatopluk I, who sought to expand his influence into East Frankish territories. Arnulf launched several campaigns against Moravia, though he was unable to completely subdue Svatopluk, resulting in a prolonged and draining border conflict.
One of Arnulf's most celebrated military achievements occurred in 891 at the Battle of Leuven. A massive Viking army had established a fortified camp along the Dyle river in Lotharingia. Arnulf led the East Frankish forces in a decisive assault, breaking the Viking defenses and inflicting heavy casualties. This victory significantly curtailed Viking raids in the region and bolstered Arnulf's reputation as a formidable military leader.
Arnulf also actively intervened in the affairs of neighboring kingdoms. He asserted his overlordship over Lotharingia and supported various claimants in West Francia, seeking to maintain East Frankish influence over the western territories that had once been part of the unified Carolingian realm.
Italian Expedition and Imperial Coronation
In the early 890s, the political situation in Italy became highly volatile. The Italian throne was contested between Guy III of Spoleto and Berengar of Friuli. Pope Formosus, seeking to counter the growing power of Guy and his son Lambert, appealed to Arnulf for assistance.
In 894, Arnulf crossed the Alps with a large army, capturing Pavia and forcing Guy to retreat. However, Arnulf was forced to return to East Francia due to unrest and the need to address threats on his eastern borders. Following the death of Guy in 894 and the subsequent coronation of Lambert as co-emperor, Formosus renewed his plea for Arnulf's help.
Arnulf launched a second, more determined expedition into Italy in 895. He marched through the Po Valley, securing the submission of various Italian nobles. In early 896, he entered Rome, where he was crowned King of Italy and subsequently crowned Holy Roman Emperor by Pope Formosus. However, his stay in Italy was short-lived. A sudden outbreak of disease, possibly combined with a rebellion by the Roman populace incited by Lambert's supporters, forced Arnulf to abandon his campaign and retreat north of the Alps.
Later Years and Death
Following his return from Italy, Arnulf's health began to deteriorate rapidly. In 899, he suffered a severe stroke that left him partially paralyzed and unable to lead his armies or effectively govern. Despite his physical incapacitation, he continued to direct state affairs from his court until his death on 8 December 899.
Arnulf was succeeded by his only legitimate son, Louis the Child, who was only a boy at the time. This succession marked the beginning of the end for the Carolingian dynasty in East Francia, as the young king lacked the authority and military prowess to manage the powerful stem duchies.
Legacy and Historical Significance
Arnulf of Carinthia is remembered as the last effective Carolingian ruler in the East and the last emperor to attempt a genuine restoration of the unified Carolingian Empire. While his imperial coronation in Rome was a symbolic triumph, his inability to maintain a lasting presence in Italy demonstrated the irreversible fragmentation of the empire.
His reign was crucial in the formation of the German kingdom. By successfully defending East Francia against external threats and integrating the southeastern marches, Arnulf laid the groundwork for the territorial and political consolidation of what would eventually become the Holy Roman Empire of the German Nation. His efforts to project power into Lotharingia and Italy also established a precedent for the eastward and southward foreign policies that would be pursued by subsequent German monarchs. Ultimately, Arnulf's death and the subsequent weakness of his successors accelerated the rise of the powerful regional dukes, shifting the political landscape of Central Europe into the High Middle Ages.
