Ammianus Marcellinus
Ammianus Marcellinus (c. 330 – c. 391–400 AD) was a Roman soldier and historian who authored the Res Gestae, the penultimate major historical account surviving from classical antiquity, which chronicles the history of the Roman Empire from the accession of Nerva in 96 AD to the death of Emperor Valens at the Battle of Adrianople in 378 AD.
Early Life and Military Career
Ammianus was born into a noble, Greek-speaking family in the eastern part of the Roman Empire, most likely in the city of Antioch in Syria. Despite his Greek origins, he received a thorough education in both Greek and Latin literature. As a young man, he entered the Roman military and joined the protectores domestici, an elite corps of imperial bodyguards and staff officers.
His military career began under the command of the general Ursicinus, the magister equitum (master of cavalry) in the East. Ammianus accompanied Ursicinus to Gaul to deal with the rebellion of the usurper Silvanus, and later returned to the East to face the Sasanian Empire under King Shapur II. In 359 AD, Ammianus survived the harrowing Siege of Amida, an experience he later described in vivid detail. Following the dismissal of Ursicinus, Ammianus temporarily left military service but returned to participate in Emperor Julian's ill-fated Persian campaign in 363 AD. After Julian's death in battle and the subsequent accession of Valens, Ammianus retired from the army. He eventually relocated to Rome, where he spent his later years researching and writing his historical masterpiece.
The Res Gestae
Ammianus's magnum opus, originally titled Rerum Gestarum Libri (Books of Deeds) or simply the Res Gestae, was conceived as a continuation of the Histories of Tacitus. The original work comprised 31 books, covering the history of the Roman Empire from the accession of Emperor Nerva in 96 AD to the catastrophic Battle of Adrianople in 378 AD.
Unfortunately, the first 13 books have been lost to history. The surviving 18 books (Books 14 through 31) cover a much shorter but highly critical period, from 353 AD to 378 AD. These extant books provide an invaluable, often eyewitness account of the reigns of Constantius II, Julian the Apostate, Jovian, Valentinian I, and Valens. Beyond political and military narratives, the Res Gestae is renowned for its extensive geographical and ethnographical digressions. Ammianus provided detailed descriptions of the lands, customs, and peoples of the empire's frontiers, including the Gauls, the Persians, the Goths, and the first major historical account of the Huns.
Historiography and Style
Writing in Latin as a native Greek speaker, Ammianus developed a highly distinctive literary style. His prose is characterized by a deliberate archaism, rich vocabulary, and complex rhetorical structures that reflect the literary tastes of Late Antiquity. He frequently employed poetic diction, metaphors, and elaborate similes, occasionally resulting in a dense and idiosyncratic text.
Despite his stylistic flourishes, Ammianus explicitly stated that his goal was to write an "opus veritatem professum" (a work professing truth). He is widely praised by modern scholars for his remarkable objectivity and critical methodology. He cross-referenced written documents, inscriptions, and oral testimonies, and he did not shy away from criticizing the emperors he served. While he deeply admired Julian for his intellect and military prowess, he also documented Julian's flaws and administrative missteps. Similarly, he exposed the corruption, paranoia, and cruelty of Constantius II's court, demonstrating a commitment to historical accuracy over imperial flattery.
Religious and Philosophical Views
Ammianus was a staunch adherent of traditional Roman paganism, yet his work exhibits a remarkable degree of religious tolerance, especially given the highly polarized climate of the 4th century. He viewed the rise of Christianity with a degree of detachment and frequently criticized the violent sectarianism and political maneuvering of Christian bishops. He was particularly appalled by the immense wealth and worldly ambitions of the Roman clergy.
However, his paganism did not blind him to the faults of his co-religionists. He openly disapproved of Emperor Julian's active persecution of Christians, viewing it as a violation of Julian's own principles of tolerance and a counterproductive policy that only strengthened Christian resolve. Ammianus's philosophical worldview was deeply influenced by Stoicism and Neoplatonism. He frequently attributed the rise and fall of empires to the workings of Fate (Fatum) or divine justice, yet he simultaneously emphasized the importance of human agency, moral virtue, and rational decision-making in shaping historical events.
Legacy and Influence
Ammianus Marcellinus is universally regarded as the last great Roman historian of antiquity. His Res Gestae stands as the primary and most reliable source for the political, military, and social history of the Roman Empire during the mid-to-late 4th century. Without his detailed accounts, modern understanding of the era's complex dynamics—including the early migrations of barbarian tribes and the internal decay of Roman institutions—would be severely impoverished.
During the Enlightenment, Ammianus found a profound admirer in the British historian Edward Gibbon. In his monumental work, The History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire, Gibbon praised Ammianus as an "accurate and faithful guide" and relied heavily on his narrative to construct the history of the period. Today, Ammianus continues to be studied not only for his historical data but also for his unique perspective as a Greek intellectual writing in Latin, bridging the cultural divide of the late Roman world.
