Amati
The Amati family was a prominent dynasty of Italian luthiers based in Cremona, Italy, who played a foundational role in the development, refinement, and standardization of the modern violin family of instruments from the mid-16th to the mid-18th century.
History and Origins
The Amati workshop was established by Andrea Amati (c. 1505–1577), who is widely regarded as the founder of the Cremonese school of violin making. Andrea is credited with designing the first instruments that closely resemble the modern violin, viola, and cello. His reputation was solidified when he received a prestigious commission from King Charles IX of France to build a complete set of stringed instruments for the royal court. Following Andrea's death, the workshop was inherited by his two sons, Antonio Amati (c. 1540–1607) and Girolamo Amati (c. 1548–1630), who worked together and are often referred to as "The Brothers Amati." They maintained the high standards of their father and expanded the family's reputation across Europe.
Nicolò Amati and the Golden Age
The most celebrated member of the dynasty was Nicolò Amati (1596–1684), the son of Girolamo. Nicolò refined the family's instrument designs, most notably introducing the "Grand Pattern" (forma grande), which featured a slightly larger body that produced a richer, more powerful tone while retaining the characteristic Amati sweetness. Nicolò's workshop became the premier center for luthiery in Europe. Crucially, he took on several apprentices who would go on to become legendary makers in their own right, including Antonio Stradivari, Andrea Guarneri, and possibly Jacob Stainer. Through these students, the Amati legacy profoundly shaped the future of violin making. The family line continued with Nicolò's son, Girolamo Amati II (1649–1740), but the workshop's prominence declined after his death, marking the end of the Amati dynasty.
Design and Acoustic Characteristics
Instruments crafted by the Amati family are renowned for their exquisite craftsmanship, elegant proportions, and distinct acoustic properties. They typically feature a high, rounded arching on both the top and back plates, which contributes to their focused and sweet tonal quality. The f-holes are gracefully cut, often with a slightly upright stance, and the scroll carvings are masterful in their symmetry and fluidity. The Amati varnish is highly prized, ranging from a soft golden-yellow to a rich, translucent orange-brown, applied over a meticulously prepared wood surface. Acoustically, Amati instruments are celebrated for their clarity, warmth, and responsiveness, making them particularly favored for chamber music, though they generally possess a more intimate volume compared to the later, flatter-arched instruments of Stradivari and Guarneri del Gesù.
Legacy and Surviving Instruments
The Amati family's contribution to music history is immeasurable, as they established the geometric and acoustic templates that all subsequent luthiers have followed or reacted against. Today, surviving Amati instruments are exceedingly rare and highly sought after by both world-class soloists and collectors. Many of the instruments from the original Charles IX commission, including the famous "King" cello crafted by Andrea Amati around 1538, are preserved in major institutions such as the National Music Museum in South Dakota and the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford. The enduring prestige of the Amati name continues to symbolize the pinnacle of the classical Cremonese tradition in string instrument making.
