Adrastea (moon)
Adrastea is the second smallest and second innermost of the four inner moons of Jupiter, recognized primarily for its extremely small size and its critical role as the primary source of material for the planet's main ring system.
Discovery and Naming
Adrastea was discovered in 1979 by Stephen P. Synnott and the Voyager 1 imaging team through the analysis of images taken by the spacecraft as it approached the Jovian system. It was the first moon to be discovered from images taken by an interplanetary spacecraft rather than through ground-based telescopic observations. Upon its discovery, it was temporarily designated S/1979 J 1. In 1983, the International Astronomical Union officially named the moon after Adrastea, a nymph in Greek mythology who, along with her sister Ida, was the foster mother of Zeus (the Greek equivalent of the Roman god Jupiter).
Orbit and Rotation
Adrastea orbits Jupiter at an average distance of approximately 129,000 kilometers, making it the second closest moon to the planet after Metis. It completes a single orbit in just 7.15 hours (0.298 Earth days), which is one of the shortest orbital periods of any moon in the Solar System. The moon's orbit lies just outside the main ring of Jupiter, though it is deeply embedded within the planet's broader ring system. Because Adrastea orbits well within Jupiter's synchronous orbit radius, tidal interactions cause its orbit to slowly decay over time. Like most regular moons, Adrastea is tidally locked to Jupiter, meaning it rotates on its axis in the same amount of time it takes to complete an orbit, keeping one face permanently pointed toward the planet.
Physical Characteristics
With dimensions of roughly 20 by 14 by 12 kilometers, Adrastea is one of the smallest known moons in the Solar System. Its irregular, elongated shape suggests that its self-gravity is insufficient to pull it into a spherical form. High-resolution images from the Galileo spacecraft in the late 1990s revealed that Adrastea has a relatively smooth surface compared to other small Jovian moons, though it is marked by a few small impact craters and linear features. The exact mass and density of Adrastea remain unknown due to its minuscule size and the lack of significant gravitational influence on passing spacecraft. However, based on its visual appearance and similarities to the slightly larger moon Amalthea, it is hypothesized to be composed primarily of water ice mixed with highly porous, dark material, giving it a very low albedo.
Relationship to Jupiter's Rings
Adrastea plays a fundamental role in the dynamics of the Jovian ring system. It is considered the primary source of the dust and debris that constitute Jupiter's main ring. As micrometeorites continuously bombard the surface of Adrastea, they eject fine particulate matter into space. Because the moon orbits so close to the main ring, this ejected material easily escapes the moon's weak gravitational pull and spreads out along its orbital path, replenishing the ring. This continuous cycle of impact and ejection ensures that the main ring remains relatively dense and well-defined, despite the rapid loss of dust particles due to orbital decay and electromagnetic forces from Jupiter's magnetosphere.
