Abae
Abae was an ancient town in the region of Phocis in central Greece, renowned in classical antiquity for its prestigious oracle and temple dedicated to the god Apollo.
Geography and Location
Abae was situated in the eastern part of Phocis, near the borders of Opuntian Locris. It was located in a fertile plain, separated from the coastal plain of Locris by a range of hills. The exact site of the ancient town has been identified by modern archaeologists near the contemporary village of Exarchos, where significant ancient ruins and fortifications have been discovered. The town's strategic position allowed it to control the vital routes between Phocis, Locris, and Boeotia, contributing to its early prosperity.
The Oracle and Temple of Apollo
The primary claim to fame for Abae was its oracle and the magnificent temple of Apollo, often referred to as Apollo Abaeus. In antiquity, the Abae oracle was highly revered and considered nearly as authoritative and wealthy as the famous Oracle of Delphi. The sanctuary attracted numerous pilgrims and was consulted by prominent historical figures. According to the historian Herodotus, the Lydian king Croesus sent envoys to test various oracles, including Abae, before deciding to consult Delphi. During the Greco-Persian Wars, the Persian general Mardonius also sought guidance from the Abae oracle. Additionally, the Spartan regent Pausanias is recorded to have inquired there regarding his political and military ambitions. The temple was adorned with numerous votive offerings, tripods, and statues, reflecting its immense wealth and religious significance.
Historical Decline and Destruction
Despite its religious prominence, Abae suffered severe destruction on multiple occasions due to its location in a highly contested region. During the Second Persian invasion of Greece in 480 BC, the town and its sacred temple were sacked and burned to the ground by the army of Xerxes I. The Phocians managed to rebuild the sanctuary, but it faced further devastation during the Third Sacred War (356–346 BC). In this conflict, the Phocians were pitted against a coalition led by Thebes, and the Theban forces ultimately destroyed Abae once again.
Following these catastrophic events, the town never fully recovered its former glory. When the geographer Strabo wrote about the region, he noted that Abae had been reduced to a mere village. The travel writer Pausanias, who visited the area in the 2nd century AD, described seeing the ruins of the temple and a few remaining statues, though the site was largely in a state of decay. A small settlement persisted in the area during the Roman and Byzantine periods, but the ancient town's historical and religious significance had permanently faded.
Archaeological Investigations
Modern archaeological efforts have helped to confirm the location and history of Abae. Excavations near Exarchos have uncovered remnants of ancient walls, pottery, and architectural fragments that align with the historical descriptions of the town. The discovery of a fortified acropolis and various artifacts from the Archaic and Classical periods provides physical evidence of the town's prosperity before its destruction. While the grand temple of Apollo Abaeus has not been fully excavated, the surrounding archaeological landscape continues to offer valuable insights into the religious and civic life of ancient Phocis.
