Bombay Sapphire is a premium gin brand owned by the Bombay Spirits Company, a subsidiary of Bacardi, celebrated for its distinctive sapphire-blue bottle and its vapor-infused botanical recipe that sets it apart from traditional London dry gins. The spirit is named after the city of Bombay (now Mumbai), reflecting the colonial-era origins of gin in India, and the gemstone sapphire alludes to the bottle's iconic blue color.

History

Bombay Sapphire was launched in 1987 by the Bombay Spirits Company, a partnership between the French spirits group Pernod Ricard and the American distribution company Carillon Importers. The brand was conceived as a high-end, more approachable alternative to traditional London dry gins. The recipe was inspired by a 1760s formula attributed to Thomas Dakin, a Warrington, England distiller, which featured eight botanicals. The brand gained rapid popularity in the United States, particularly in the 1990s cocktail renaissance, and was later acquired by Bacardi Limited in 1998. In 2014, Bacardi opened the Bombay Sapphire Distillery at Laverstoke Mill in Hampshire, England, restoring a historic 18th-century water mill as a state-of-the-art production and visitor attraction.

Production Process

Bombay Sapphire uses a unique "vapour infusion" method rather than the traditional boiling of botanicals in the base spirit. In this process, neutral grain spirit is vaporized and passed through a basket containing the ten botanicals, allowing the volatile oils to be gently extracted by the rising alcohol vapor. This technique yields a lighter, more delicate flavour profile compared to steeping or boiling. The base spirit is a high-quality wheat-derived neutral alcohol, distilled at Laverstoke Mill. The botanical blend remains a closely guarded secret, but five core ingredients are officially named: juniper, coriander, lemon peel, angelica root, and almonds; the other five are believed to include cassia, liquorice, orris root, grains of paradise, and cubeb berries. The water used for dilution comes from the Hampshire chalk aquifer, naturally filtered and soft.

Flavor Profile

Bombay Sapphire is classified as a London dry gin, though its production does not strictly adhere to EU regulations for that category due to the vapour infusion method. The taste is characterized by a balanced, floral, and citrus-forward profile. The juniper remains present but is mellowed by coriander's spicy notes, lemon peel's brightness, and angelica's earthy undertones. The inclusion of exotic botanicals like grains of paradise adds a subtle peppery warmth. The ABV is 40% (80 proof) in most markets, with some editions at 43% or 47%.

Product Range

The core expression is Bombay Sapphire London Dry Gin. A higher-strength variant, Bombay Sapphire East, was introduced in 2014, adding Thai lemongrass and Vietnamese black pepper to the standard ten botanicals, bottled at 42% ABV. Bombay Sapphire Premier Cru, launched in 2015, is a "first press" edition using only the first distillation run of a single botanical batch, resulting in a more concentrated flavour, sold in limited quantities at 47% ABV. The brand also releases occasional limited-edition bottles and gift sets, sometimes with artistic collaborations on the packaging.

Cultural Significance and Marketing

Bombay Sapphire's distinctive blue bottle was designed by British glassware manufacturer Stölzle to evoke the sapphire gemstone and premium quality. The brand has been heavily associated with the cocktail revival of the late 20th and early 21st centuries, sponsoring bartender competitions and collaborating with celebrity chefs and mixologists like Gary Regan and Tony Conigliaro. It is the official gin partner of the James Bond film franchise in several promotions, and its distillery at Laverstoke Mill has become a tourist destination in Hampshire, featuring sustainable design and floodplain restoration.

Awards and Recognition

Bombay Sapphire has won numerous industry accolades, including multiple Gold Medals at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition, the International Wine & Spirit Competition, and the World Gin Awards. It is consistently ranked among the top-selling premium gins globally, with a strong presence in the United States, the United Kingdom, and emerging markets in Asia and South America.
