Cy Young Award

The Cy Young Award is an annual baseball award presented to the best pitchers in Major League Baseball (MLB), one for the American League (AL) and one for the National League (NL). Established in 1956, it is considered the highest pitching honor in the sport, recognizing excellence in pitching performance over the regular season.

The award was created in honor of Hall of Fame pitcher Denton True "Cy" Young, who holds the MLB record for career wins with 511. Initially, only one award was given for the entire major leagues from 1956 to 1966. Brooklyn Dodgers pitcher Don Newcombe was the inaugural winner. In 1967, following the lead of the Most Valuable Player (MVP) Award, the Baseball Writers' Association of America (BBWAA) began presenting separate awards for each league. The voting process has also evolved; from 1970 onward, the BBWAA has used a weighted points system based on a ballot where writers rank their top pitchers, rather than a simple first-past-the-post vote.

A points system is applied: a first-place vote is worth 7 points, second place 4 points, third place 3 points, fourth place 2 points, and fifth place 1 point. The pitcher with the highest total points wins the award. Ties are possible but have never occurred for the award itself. Roger Clemens holds the record with seven awards, winning in the AL with the Boston Red Sox, Toronto Blue Jays, and New York Yankees, and in the NL with the Houston Astros. Randy Johnson won five times, all in the NL, including four consecutively from 1999 to 2002. Greg Maddux won four consecutive awards in the NL from 1992 to 1995. Steve Carlton and Tom Seaver are among other legendary multiple winners. In 1968, Detroit Tigers pitcher Denny McLain became the only pitcher to win the award unanimously in a single-league format while also being the last to win it for both leagues before the split. More recently, pitchers like Clayton Kershaw, Max Scherzer, and Jacob deGrom have been dominant multiple-time winners in the 21st century.
