Belle and Sebastian are a Scottish indie pop band formed in Glasgow in January 1996, widely recognized for their literate, melancholic, and melodic songwriting that has significantly shaped the indie pop and chamber pop genres.

History

Formation and early years (1996–1998)

Belle and Sebastian was formed in Glasgow in 1996 by Stuart Murdoch and Stuart David, who met at a government-sponsored enterprise training course for the unemployed. The duo recorded a set of demo tracks in a local church hall, which caught the attention of Stow College's music business course. The college's label, Electric Honey, released their debut album, Tigermilk, in a limited run of 1,000 copies. The album's scarcity and word-of-mouth acclaim quickly generated a cult following.

Shortly after, the band signed with the independent label Jeepster Records. They expanded their lineup to include Stevie Jackson, Chris Geddes, Richard Colburn, Sarah Martin, and Mick Cooke. Their second album, If You're Feeling Sinister, was released in late 1996 and is widely considered by critics and fans to be their masterpiece, cementing their reputation in the indie music scene. In 1998, they released The Boy with the Arab Strap, which reached number 12 on the UK Albums Chart and won the band the Best Newcomer award at the Brit Awards in 1999.

Middle period and stylistic shifts (1999–2008)

Following the departure of bassist Stuart David in 2000 to focus on his band Looper, Belle and Sebastian released Fold Your Hands Child, You Walk Like a Peasant, which featured more collaborative songwriting and string arrangements. In 2002, they contributed to the soundtrack of the film Storytelling.

A significant shift in their sound occurred with the 2003 release of Dear Catastrophe Waitress, produced by Trevor Horn. The album introduced a more polished, upbeat, and pop-oriented production style, contrasting with their earlier lo-fi and intimate aesthetic. This evolution continued with The Life Pursuit (2006), produced by Tony Hoffer, which incorporated elements of 1970s pop, soul, and glam rock, yielding some of their most commercially successful singles, such as "Funny Little Frog."

Later career and recent releases (2010–present)

The band released Write About Love in 2010, which saw a return to a more collaborative vocal approach and featured a duet with actress Carey Mulligan. In 2015, they released Girls in Peacetime Want to Dance, an album heavily influenced by dance-pop and disco, produced by Tony Hoffer.

In 2019, Belle and Sebastian released their first official soundtrack album, Days of the Bagnold Summer, for the film adaptation of the graphic novel of the same name. The band returned to their roots with A Bit of Previous (2022), their first album in seven years, which was recorded in their hometown of Glasgow and featured a more organic, folk-tinged sound. This was quickly followed by Late Developers in early 2023, an album comprising songs recorded during the same sessions as A Bit of Previous.
