History

Founded on March 12, 1885, as the Territorial Normal School, the institution was established by the 13th Arizona Territorial Legislature to train teachers for the growing Arizona Territory. Over the decades, it underwent several name changes reflecting its expanding academic scope, including Tempe Normal School, Tempe State Teachers College, Arizona State Teachers College, and Arizona State College. In 1958, following a statewide ballot initiative, the institution was officially designated as Arizona State University. Under the leadership of President Michael M.
