American Film Institute

The American Film Institute (AFI) is a nonprofit organization based in Los Angeles, California, dedicated to preserving and celebrating the heritage of the moving image in the United States, advancing the art of film and television, and training the next generation of filmmakers.

History and Foundation

The American Film Institute was founded in 1967 at the behest of the White House, the National Endowment for the Arts, and the Ford Foundation. Its creation was spurred by a growing concern among cultural leaders and policymakers that the history of American cinema was being lost due to the physical deterioration of early film stock and a lack of formal academic study. George Stevens Jr., a prominent film and television director and producer, was appointed as the institute's first director. Under his leadership, AFI established its core mission to honor the moving image, educate future filmmakers, and preserve the nation's cinematic heritage for future generations.

AFI Conservatory

A central pillar of the institute's educational mission is the AFI Conservatory, a highly selective graduate film school located on the AFI campus in the Hollywood Hills of Los Angeles. The Conservatory offers a Master of Fine Arts (MFA) degree in six disciplines: cinematography, directing, editing, producing, production design, and screenwriting. Its pedagogy is heavily rooted in hands-on, practical experience; students are required to produce multiple short films during their tenure, working collaboratively across different disciplines to simulate a professional studio environment. The program has produced a roster of highly successful alumni who have gone on to shape contemporary cinema, including David Lynch, Darren Aronofsky, Todd Field, Janusz Kamiński, and Victor Nuñez.

AFI Catalog and Preservation

To fulfill its mandate of preserving film heritage, AFI maintains the AFI Catalog of Feature Films, a comprehensive, scholarly database that documents the history of American feature film production from 1893 to the present. It serves as a vital, authoritative resource for film historians, researchers, and industry professionals. Furthermore, AFI plays a significant role in national film preservation efforts. The organization collaborates closely with the Library of Congress, providing expert consultation and helping to select films for the National Film Registry, a list of movies deemed culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant that are preserved for posterity.

AFI Awards and Lists

The institute is widely recognized by the general public for its special awards and curated lists, which have significantly influenced public discourse on classic American film. The AFI Life Achievement Award is presented annually to an individual for their lifetime contribution to American cinema. Past recipients represent a cross-section of the industry's most revered talents, including John Ford, Bette Davis, Steven Spielberg, Meryl Streep, and Julie Andrews. Additionally, to celebrate the centennial of American cinema in the late 1990s and early 2000s, AFI launched the "AFI's 100 Years..." series. This initiative produced a collection of highly influential lists, such as "100 Movies," "100 Stars," "100 Heroes & Villains," and "100 Songs," which were determined by panels of industry experts and have since become standard reference points in film criticism and popular culture.

AFI Fest

AFI also hosts AFI Fest, an annual film festival held in Los Angeles. The festival showcases a diverse selection of international and domestic films, featuring high-profile premieres, curated retrospectives, and special industry events. AFI Fest serves as a major platform for both established auteurs and emerging filmmakers to present their work to audiences, critics, and industry professionals.
