Chordate
Chordates are animals that possess a notochord, a dorsal hollow nerve cord, pharyngeal slits, and a post-anal tail at some point in their life cycle, and comprise the phylum Chordata within the deuterostome lineage.
Defining Characteristics
All chordates share four key morphological features at least during embryonic development or a specific life stage: a notochord (a flexible rod that provides skeletal support), a dorsal hollow nerve cord (which develops into the central nervous system in vertebrates), pharyngeal slits or pouches (openings between the pharynx and the exterior that function in filter-feeding or gas exchange), and a post-anal tail (a muscular extension beyond the anus). In many chordates, such as vertebrates, the notochord is replaced by a vertebral column during development, while in others it persists throughout life.
Subphyla and Major Groups
The phylum Chordata is traditionally divided into three subphyla, distinguished primarily by differences in body plan and the presence or absence of a cranium and vertebrae.
Cephalochordata
Cephalochordates, commonly known as lancelets or amphioxi, are small, fish-like marine animals that retain all four chordate characteristics into adulthood. They lack a well-defined head or brain and have a simple body plan with a notochord that extends to the anterior tip. They are filter feeders and are considered the most basal living chordates.
Urochordata
Urochordates, or tunicates (including sea squirts, salps, and larvaceans), are marine animals that typically display chordate features only during their larval stage. The adult form is often sessile and loses both the notochord and tail, retaining only the pharyngeal slits for filter feeding. The tadpole-like larva possesses a notochord and dorsal nerve cord, which degenerate during metamorphosis.
Vertebrata
Vertebrates are chordates with a vertebral column (spine) that encloses the nerve cord, and a well-developed cranium protecting the brain. This subphylum includes jawless fishes (agnathans, e.g., lampreys and hagfishes), jawed fishes (cartilaginous and bony fishes), amphibians, reptiles, birds, and mammals. Vertebrates represent the most diverse and complex chordate lineage, with more than 66,000 described species. The emergence of jaws, limbs, and the amniotic egg were key innovations that allowed vertebrates to exploit terrestrial environments.
Evolutionary History
Chordates first appear in the fossil record during the Cambrian period, around 530 million years ago. Early forms such as Pikaia and Metaspriggina from the Burgess Shale show clear chordate features. The deuterostome lineage, which includes echinoderms (sea stars and relatives) and hemichordates, is the sister group of chordates. Genetic and developmental studies support a close relationship between cephalochordates and vertebrates, with tunicates considered the closest living relatives to vertebrates. The evolution of the neural crest, a population of multipotent cells unique to vertebrates, is considered a major innovation that allowed for the development of complex sensory organs and the cranium.
Diversity and Ecology
Chordates occupy virtually every habitat on Earth, from the deep sea to high mountain ranges. Marine chordates include tunicates (often found on reefs and sea floors), lancelets (burrowing in sandy sediments), and the vast majority of fish. Terrestrial chordates are represented by amphibians, reptiles, birds, and mammals. The group exhibits extraordinary variation in body size, from the dwarf goby fish (about 8 mm) to the blue whale (over 30 m). Chordates play crucial ecological roles as predators, prey, filter feeders, and ecosystem engineers. Humans belong to the chordate class Mammalia, and the phylum is of profound significance for understanding vertebrate biology, evolution, and medicine.
