Ariel Sharon
Ariel Sharon was an Israeli general and politician who served as the 11th Prime Minister of Israel from March 2001 until April 2006, widely recognized as one of the most prominent and controversial figures in the history of the Israeli state.
Early Life and Military Career
Ariel Sharon was born Ariel Scheinermann on February 26, 1928, in Kfar Malal, a moshav in Mandatory Palestine, to Jewish immigrants from Russia. He joined the Haganah, the pre-state Jewish militia, at a young age and later became a key figure in the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) upon the state's establishment in 1948. Sharon fought in the 1948 Arab-Israeli War, where he was wounded, and subsequently rose through the military ranks. He gained early notoriety for establishing and commanding Unit 101, a special forces unit tasked with carrying out reprisal operations against Palestinian fedayeen in the 1950s.
Sharon's military career was marked by bold and often controversial tactics. He played a significant role in the 1956 Suez Crisis, the 1967 Six-Day War, and most notably the 1973 Yom Kippur War. During the Yom Kippur War, Sharon commanded an armored division that executed a daring crossing of the Suez Canal, a maneuver widely credited with turning the tide of the conflict in Israel's favor and cementing his status as a national military hero. He retired from the military in 1973 with the rank of Major General.
Political Rise and Ministerial Roles
Following his military retirement, Sharon entered politics and was instrumental in the formation of the Likud party, a right-wing political coalition. He was first elected to the Knesset (Israeli parliament) in 1973. Over the next few decades, he held several key cabinet positions, including Minister of Agriculture, Minister of Defense, and Minister of Foreign Affairs.
As Minister of Defense under Prime Minister Menachem Begin in 1982, Sharon was the chief architect of the 1982 Lebanon War. The invasion aimed to expel the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) from southern Lebanon but resulted in a prolonged and costly occupation. Sharon faced intense international and domestic scrutiny following the Sabra and Shatila massacre, in which Lebanese Christian militias allied with Israel killed hundreds of Palestinian and Lebanese civilians in refugee camps. An Israeli judicial commission, the Kahan Commission, found Sharon indirectly responsible for failing to prevent the massacre, leading to his dismissal as Defense Minister, though he remained in the cabinet in a different role.
Prime Ministership
Sharon's path to the premiership culminated in the late 1990s and early 2000s. In September 2000, his highly publicized visit to the Temple Mount (Haram al-Sharif) in Jerusalem, accompanied by a large security detail, sparked widespread Palestinian protests and is widely considered a catalyst for the outbreak of the Second Intifada. Following the collapse of the Camp David peace talks and the escalation of violence, Sharon was elected Prime Minister in a special election in February 2001.
During his tenure as Prime Minister, Sharon adopted a hardline security approach to combat the Second Intifada. He authorized targeted assassinations of militant leaders, ordered military reoccupations of West Bank cities, and initiated the construction of the Israeli West Bank barrier. While the barrier and military operations significantly reduced suicide bombings within Israel, they also drew heavy international criticism for their impact on Palestinian daily life and the annexation of land. Domestically, Sharon maintained a strong economy and navigated complex coalition politics, eventually forming a unity government with the Labor Party.
Unilateral Disengagement and Later Years
In a dramatic shift in his political ideology, Sharon championed the unilateral disengagement plan in 2004. Despite fierce opposition from within his own Likud party and the settler movement, he successfully pushed through the legislation to dismantle all Israeli settlements in the Gaza Strip and four in the northern West Bank. The disengagement was executed in the summer of 2005, marking the first time Israel had completely withdrawn from a territory it had captured in 1967.
The political fallout from the disengagement led Sharon to leave the Likud party in late 2005 and form a new centrist party, Kadima. He positioned himself to run for re-election on a platform of further unilateral withdrawals from parts of the West Bank. However, before he could lead the party into the upcoming elections, Sharon suffered a massive hemorrhagic stroke on January 4, 2006. He was placed in a coma and transferred power to his deputy, Ehud Olmert, who subsequently became Prime Minister.
Legacy and Death
Ariel Sharon remained in a vegetative state for eight years, receiving continuous medical care at the Sheba Medical Center and later at his family farm. He died on January 11, 2014, at the age of 85, from renal failure. He was buried beside his second wife, Lily, at his Sycamore Ranch in the Negev desert.
Sharon's legacy remains deeply polarized. To many Israelis, he is remembered as a brilliant military strategist who ensured the state's survival and a pragmatic leader who made the difficult decision to withdraw from Gaza. To Palestinians and much of the international community, he is often viewed as a hardliner whose military and settlement policies caused immense suffering and entrenched the occupation. His life and career reflect the complex, often contradictory history of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and the broader Middle East.
