Apple II
The Apple II is an 8-bit home computer and one of the world's first highly successful mass-produced microcomputer products, designed primarily by Steve Wozniak and manufactured by Apple Computer from 1977 to 1993.
History and Development
The Apple II was introduced at the inaugural West Coast Computer Faire on April 16, 1977, marking a significant milestone in the personal computer revolution. It was part of the "1977 trinity" of consumer-oriented computers, alongside the Commodore PET and the TRS-80, which transitioned the industry from hobbyist kits to mass-market appliances. Unlike its predecessor, the Apple I, which was sold as a bare motherboard, the Apple II featured a fully assembled plastic case. The platform enjoyed an exceptionally long production run, evolving through several models, including the Apple II Plus, Apple IIe, Apple IIc, and the 16-bit Apple IIGS, before being officially discontinued in November 1993.
Design and Hardware
The original Apple II was powered by a MOS Technology 6502 microprocessor running at 1.023 MHz. It initially shipped with 4 KB of RAM, though it could be expanded up to 48 KB, and later 64 KB with the introduction of the language card. One of its most revolutionary features was its color graphics capability, which utilized a custom circuit designed by Wozniak to display colors on a standard television set or a dedicated monitor. The system featured eight internal expansion slots, an open architecture that allowed third-party developers to create a vast array of hardware add-ons, including memory expansions, serial interfaces, and hard drives. Storage was initially handled via a cassette tape interface, but the introduction of the Disk II 5.25-inch floppy disk drive in 1978, also designed by Wozniak, significantly improved data access speeds and reliability. The computer's iconic beige plastic case, designed by Jerry Manock, gave it a consumer-friendly aesthetic that distinguished it from the metal enclosures of contemporary business machines.
Software and Operating System
The Apple II's software ecosystem was a critical component of its success. It originally shipped with Integer BASIC, written by Wozniak, stored in ROM. Later models included Applesoft BASIC, licensed from Microsoft, which supported floating-point arithmetic. The operating system, Apple DOS, was eventually succeeded by ProDOS, which offered better support for larger storage devices and hierarchical file systems. The platform's transition from a hobbyist machine to a legitimate business tool was largely driven by the release of VisiCalc in 1979. As the world's first electronic spreadsheet, VisiCalc became the first "killer app," compelling businesses to purchase the Apple II for financial planning and accounting. Additionally, the platform supported a massive library of educational software and video games, cementing its presence in schools and homes.
Impact and Legacy
The Apple II is widely regarded as the machine that launched the personal computer industry. Its commercial success generated the revenue that allowed Apple Computer to go public in 1980, creating several millionaires and establishing the company as a major technological force. The open architecture of the Apple II set a precedent for future hardware expansion, while its emphasis on color graphics and consumer-friendly design influenced subsequent generations of personal computers. Although eventually superseded by the graphical user interface-driven Macintosh line, the Apple II family remained a significant revenue stream for Apple throughout the 1980s. Today, the Apple II is celebrated as a landmark achievement in computing history, symbolizing the democratization of technology and the dawn of the microcomputer era.
