Annals of Mathematics
The Annals of Mathematics is a prestigious, peer-reviewed academic journal that publishes original research papers in all branches of pure mathematics, widely recognized as one of the most top-tier and influential mathematics journals in the world.
History
The journal was originally founded in 1884 by Ormond Stone under the name The Analyst. Later that same year, it was renamed the Annals of Mathematics. During its early years, it was published at the University of Virginia. In 1911, the journal was transferred to Harvard University, where it remained until 1933. Since 1933, it has been jointly published by Princeton University and the Institute for Advanced Study (IAS), a partnership that has firmly cemented its status as a premier publication in the mathematical sciences.
Scope and Content
The Annals of Mathematics focuses exclusively on pure mathematics. It publishes major research papers that represent significant breakthroughs or profound advancements in various mathematical fields, including algebra, geometry, topology, number theory, analysis, and mathematical logic. The journal is known for its rigorous peer-review process and exceptionally high editorial standards, typically accepting only papers that offer substantial, novel, and long-lasting contributions to the discipline. It does not generally publish survey articles, expository papers, or applied mathematics research, maintaining a strict focus on foundational and theoretical mathematical discoveries.
Editorial Board and Publication
The journal is managed by an editorial board comprising distinguished mathematicians, often including faculty members from Princeton University and the Institute for Advanced Study, alongside leading scholars from other global institutions. The editorial process is notoriously rigorous, resulting in a very low acceptance rate. The Annals is published bimonthly, releasing six issues per year. The ongoing collaboration between Princeton University and the IAS ensures that the journal benefits directly from the intellectual environment of two of the world's leading centers for mathematical research.
Notable Publications
Throughout its history, the Annals of Mathematics has been the venue for some of the most celebrated and consequential mathematical proofs of the modern era. One of the most famous examples is Andrew Wiles's 1995 paper, "Modular elliptic curves and Fermat's Last Theorem," which presented the historic proof of Fermat's Last Theorem, a problem that had remained unsolved for over three centuries. The journal has also featured landmark papers in algebraic geometry, number theory, and topology authored by numerous Fields Medalists and Abel Prize laureates, serving as a historical record of the most critical developments in 20th and 21st-century mathematics.
Impact and Reputation
In the global mathematical community, the Annals of Mathematics is universally regarded as one of the "top four" general mathematics journals, alongside Inventiones Mathematicae, Acta Mathematica, and the Journal of the American Mathematical Society (JAMS). Publishing a paper in the Annals is considered a career-defining achievement for mathematicians and is often viewed as a strong indicator of a researcher's eligibility for the highest honors in the field, such as the Fields Medal. While traditional impact factors are generally less emphasized in mathematics compared to the natural sciences, the Annals consistently ranks at the very top of mathematical citation metrics, reflecting the profound and enduring influence of the research it disseminates.
