The Baltimore Ravens are a professional American football team based in Baltimore, competing in the National Football League (NFL) as a member club of the American Football Conference (AFC) North division.

History and Establishment

The franchise was established in 1996 following a controversial relocation of the Cleveland Browns. In 1995, Browns owner Art Modell announced his intention to move the team to Baltimore, which had been without an NFL team since the Colts relocated to Indianapolis in 1984. The move sparked significant legal and public backlash in Cleveland. A settlement was eventually reached between the NFL, Modell, and the city of Cleveland. Under the agreement, Modell was allowed to move his personnel and organization to Baltimore to form a new franchise, while the Browns' name, colors, history, and records remained in Cleveland. Consequently, the NFL officially recognizes the Ravens as an expansion team that began play in 1996, rather than a direct continuation of the original Browns franchise.

The team's name was chosen through a fan contest and pays homage to Edgar Allan Poe's famous poem "The Raven." Poe spent a significant portion of his life in Baltimore and is buried there, making the name a culturally resonant choice for the city.

The Ravens play their home games at M&T Bank Stadium, located in the Ridgely's Delight neighborhood of Baltimore, adjacent to Oriole Park at Camden Yards, home of the Baltimore Orioles. Opened in 1998 as Ravens Stadium at Camden Yards, the venue has a seating capacity of over 71,000 and is renowned for its passionate fan base and loud game-day atmosphere. The team's headquarters and training facility, the Under Armour Performance Center, is located in Owings Mills, Maryland, a suburb of Baltimore. Opened in 2004, the state-of-the-art complex serves as the primary practice and administrative hub for the organization.

The Ravens' primary colors are purple, black, and metallic gold, which are prominently featured in their uniforms and branding. The team's original logo featured a raven's head in profile, but it was replaced in 1999 by a shield design incorporating a raven and the letter "B," reflecting the heraldic history of the Calvert family, the founders of the Maryland colony. The team's mascots are Poe, a live raven, and two costumed characters named Edgar and Allan, further cementing the literary connection.
