Acquire is a classic multi-player board game designed by Sid Sackson that focuses on the strategic formation, expansion, and merging of hotel chains to accumulate wealth. First published in 1962, the game is widely regarded as a pioneering title in the realm of economic strategy games and has maintained enduring popularity due to its elegant mechanics, blend of luck and skill, and high level of player interaction.

History and Publication

Acquire was designed by American game designer Sid Sackson, who originally developed the concept using a modified chessboard and cardboard pieces. The game was first published in 1962 by the 3M Company as part of their highly successful bookshelf game series, which aimed to bring sophisticated, adult-oriented strategy games to the mass market.

Over the decades, Acquire has been published by several prominent game companies. After 3M sold its game division to Avalon Hill in 1976, Avalon Hill released multiple editions, including a widely recognized computer-themed version in the 1990s. Hasbro acquired Avalon Hill in 1998 and subsequently published their own iterations. In recent years, the rights have been managed by various publishers, including Renegade Game Studios, which released a modern edition that restored the original hotel theme. In 2011, Acquire was inducted into the Academy of Adventure Gaming Arts & Design Hall of Fame, cementing its legacy as one of the most influential board games of the 20th century.

Components and Setup

A standard edition of Acquire includes a game board representing a grid of 108 spaces (labeled A through I and 1 through 12), 108 corresponding cardboard tiles, 25 shares of stock for each of seven distinct hotel chains, and play money. The seven hotel chains are typically color-coded and named, such as American, Continental, Festival, Imperial, Sackson, Tower, and Worldwide.

At the beginning of the game, each player receives a starting capital and draws six random tiles. These tiles correspond to specific coordinates on the board. The starting player is determined by drawing tiles, with the player holding the tile closest to the A-1 position going first.

Gameplay Mechanics

The core objective of Acquire is to become the wealthiest player by the end of the game. Wealth is generated primarily through buying and selling stock in hotel chains and receiving bonuses during corporate mergers. A player's turn consists of three distinct phases:

  1. Placing a Tile: The active player places one of their six tiles onto the corresponding space on the board. This action can result in founding a new hotel chain, expanding an existing one, or triggering a merger between two or more chains.
  2. Buying Stock: After placing a tile, the player has the option to purchase up to three shares of stock in any active hotel chains currently on the board. The cost of stock is determined by the size of the chain; larger chains have more expensive shares.
  3. Drawing a Tile: The player draws a replacement tile from the draw pile to maintain a hand of six tiles, ending their turn.

Mergers and Acquisitions

The most critical and interactive mechanic in Acquire is the merger. A merger occurs when a player places a tile that connects two or more existing hotel chains. In this scenario, the larger chain (determined by the number of connected tiles) acquires the smaller chain. If the chains are of equal size, the player who placed the triggering tile decides which chain absorbs the other.

When a chain is acquired, it is removed from the board, and its shareholders are compensated. The players holding the most shares (the majority shareholder) and the second most shares (the minority shareholder) in the defunct chain receive substantial cash bonuses. Following the payout, all players, starting with the player who triggered the merger, are given the opportunity to trade their now-defunct stock for shares in the acquiring chain at a two-to-one ratio, sell it back to the bank for cash, or hold onto it in case the chain is refounded later.

Endgame and Scoring

The game approaches its conclusion when a specific condition is met: either a single hotel chain grows to encompass 11 or more tiles, or all chains on the board have reached a "safe" status of at least seven tiles, making them immune to acquisition. Once a player triggers the endgame condition, they may choose to end the game immediately or continue playing to maximize their wealth.

When the game officially ends, all active hotel chains pay out majority and minority shareholder bonuses. Players then calculate their final net worth by adding their cash on hand to the liquidation value of all their stock, calculated at the current market price. The player with the highest total net worth is declared the winner.

Strategy and Legacy

Acquire is celebrated for its deep strategic layers, which require players to balance short-term gains with long-term investments. Successful players must carefully manage their tile placement to control the timing of mergers, ensuring they hold the majority of stock in a chain just before it is acquired. The game also features an element of hidden information, as players' hands of tiles are kept secret, allowing for bluffing and calculated risks.

Despite being an American design, Acquire is frequently cited as a precursor to the modern Eurogame genre. Its emphasis on economic engine-building, indirect player conflict, and lack of player elimination align closely with the design philosophies that later popularized European board games. Today, Acquire remains a staple in the board gaming community, praised for its timeless mechanics and its ability to generate tense, highly interactive corporate battles.
