Cy Young
Cy Young was an American professional baseball pitcher who played in Major League Baseball (MLB) from 1890 to 1911. He is widely regarded as one of the greatest pitchers in baseball history, holding numerous records including the all-time records for career wins (511), losses (316), games started (815), and complete games (749), marks considered unbreakable in the modern era of baseball.
Early Life and Career
Denton True "Cy" Young was born on March 29, 1867, in Gilmore, Ohio. He earned his nickname "Cyclone" (shortened to "Cy") due to his powerful fastball, which was said to resemble a cyclone. He began his professional career with the Cleveland Spiders of the National League in 1890. Young quickly established himself as a workhorse pitcher, renowned for his durability, control, and a diverse pitching repertoire that included a fastball, curveball, and changeup.
Major League Career and Records
Young's MLB career spanned 22 seasons across five teams: the Cleveland Spiders (1890–1898), St. Louis Perfectos/Cardinals (1899–1900), Boston Americans/Red Sox (1901–1908), Cleveland Naps (1909–1911), and Boston Rustlers (1911). His most famous single-game achievement was pitching a perfect game on May 5, 1904, for the Boston Americans against the Philadelphia Athletics. This was one of three no-hitters he threw in his career. Young's career statistics are monumental, built on an era of frequent pitching appearances and complete games. His 511 career wins are 94 more than the second-place pitcher, Walter Johnson. He also holds the record for most innings pitched (7,356) and is among the leaders in shutouts (76).
Legacy and Honors
Cy Young retired in 1911 and was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1937. His legacy is permanently enshrined in the sport through the Cy Young Award, established in 1956 to honor the best pitcher in each league annually. Originally a single award for all of MLB, it was split into separate American League and National League awards in 1967. Young died on November 4, 1955, in Newcomerstown, Ohio. He is remembered not only for his statistical dominance but also for his sportsmanship and embodiment of the early, rugged era of professional baseball, where pitchers often threw complete games with minimal rest.
